The Department of Ceramic Engineering at NIT Rourkela was established in the year 1994. It specialises in the development of both traditional and advanced ceramics. It boasts state of the art high-temperature furnaces going up to 2500 Kelvin and sophisticated analytical instruments like FE-SEM, XRD, DSC, TGA, etc. The department currently intakes 51 students for the 4-year B.Tech course in Ceramic engineering and 13 students for the 5-year B.Tech and M.Tech Dual degree course in Industrial Ceramics. The department also offers a 2-year M.Tech degree in Industrial Ceramics, an M.Tech(Research) and a PhD degree in Ceramic Engineering. Admission for the B.Tech and Dual Degree courses is through JoSAA and GATE for M.Tech Degree in Industrial Ceramics.
The department has 14 full-time teaching faculties in all the salient areas of ceramic engineerings, such as Industrial ceramics, Electroceramics, Bio & Nanoceramics, Structural Ceramics, Advanced Ceramics.
The department aims to become a nationally and internationally acclaimed centre of higher learning and research in ceramic and materials engineering that will serve as a source of knowledge and expertise for industry and academia and be a preferred destination for undergraduate and graduate studies and research scholars. It has taken up the mission of producing highly qualified graduates with a strong foundation in ceramic engineering worthy of serving industry, academia, and research organisations in India and abroad.
OPENING AND CLOSING RANKS
The opening and closing ranks (in 2020) in different categories:
With recruitments from both core and non-core companies, the placement scenario of the department has steadily been on the rise. Last year, some prominent recruiters from the core sector were TATA Steel, Aditya Birla Group, Vedanta, Piramal Glass, Somany Ceramics, JSW. From the Non-core sector BYJU'S, L&T Infotech, EXL Service, Tredence Analytics, Unacademy have actively recruited Ceramic Engineers. There has been a surge in research work in this department, the faculty readily encourage and support students in the field of research. Some ongoing projects are the development of polypyrrole coated Mg alloys, the development of nanostructured si-void-c yolk/shell, and the Tough biomimetic composite inspired by abalone nacre architecture. They mainly deal with futuristic materials like Lithium-Ion Batteries, Nanomaterials, Advanced Ceramics, nanocarriers for drug delivery, and improved industrial products like advanced refractories and glass, etc.
- Sandip Kumar- bagged a prestigious All India Rank of 435 in UPSC CSE 2019
- Taniya Biswas- founder of start-up 'Suta Bombay', an Indian traditional handmade clothing brand.
The department recently completed its Silver Jubilee in the year 2019.
