Welcoming a new brood of Underwater Champions: Team Tiburon Orientations

Mar 31, 2019|a minute

Samarth Mohanty

On the eve of 28th of March, some of the best minds around the campus gathered at LA-104, to attend the inductions of Team Tiburon. The event began at around 6:30 PM and witnessed participation of more than 80 students. The team has four subsystems- Public Relations, Coding, Electronics, and Mechanical. A participant was allowed to appear for any two of the four mentioned fields. The questions were completely technical and required the students to have a good understanding of the subject matter.

Ever since its inception in December of 2014, Team Tiburon has seen tremendous development over the years. They proved their worth by becoming runners-up at Singapore Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Competition (SAUVC) in 2018. After their tremendous performance at Student Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (SAVe) competition organised by the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Chennai where they secured the first position they were all set to perform at SAUVC-2019 but due to a technical difficulty during the Qualifying test round, they failed to qualify for the next round.

The team has seen some ups and downs in recent times but that only compels them to try harder. Shailesh Prusty, the current captain of the team had this to say-

We are planning to make a new vehicle in the coming year, for which we need a very good team who could work towards achieving our goals.

The team plans on making a new vehicle in the coming year. They will be taking part in a new competition, RoboSub 2019, an underwater robotics program in which teams of high school and college students from around the world design and build an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV). These vehicles are designed to autonomously navigate through a series of tasks. Along with this, the team wishes to improvise on their preparation for the competitions that they already participate in.

Abhijeet Tripathy, a member of the team had this to say,

We were quite disappointed after what happened at SAUVC but we plan to come back stronger next year and do our best in all the competitions we take part in.

The team is all set to welcome a new generation of members who would help take the team ahead in all its future endeavors. Team MM wishes them luck and hopes that they bring many more honors for NIT Rourkela.
