The growing number of scholarships being granted necessitated a common platform to host them. Realising the need to bridge the information gap, the National Scholarships Portal aims at acting as an umbrella portal for implementing various scholarship schemes launched by the National, State and Union government. It is also an attempt to make the process of the scholarship application and delivery of funds effective and faster.

The various services enabled on the portal range from student application, application receipt, processing, sanction to the disbursal of various scholarships. It hosts about 50 scholarships worth hundreds of crores. The platform has, so far, helped disburse scholarships worth more than INR 2,400 crores. The platform boasts of more than 110 lakh applications out of which over 85 lakh applications are verified.

Various scholarships covered under NSP

Recognised for its reach, the portal covers nearly all types of scholarships from class 1 to PhD level. They are categorised broadly based on the providers of various scholarship schemes as follows :

  1. Central schemes
  2. UGC (University Grants Commission) schemes
  3. AICTE ( All India Council For Technical Education ) schemes
  4. State schemes (at present the portal covers 6 states namely - Bihar, Uttrakhand, Tripura, Karnataka, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh)

Eligibility criteria

The scholarships hosted on the NSP portal are offered by various ministries or departments under the Government of India. Thus, the eligibility criteria vary from scheme to scheme. Generally, scholarships are available for students who are differently-abled or belong to minority communities, vulnerable social groups or scheduled caste or tribe or have low parental income. The guidelines for a particular scholarship are available on the home page of the portal.

Some general eligibility criteria are as given below :

  1. Candidates whose annual family income is less than or equal to Rs.4.5 lakh per annum are covered under the ambit of the scheme.
  2. Candidates who have domicile of the North-Eastern states of India are covered under the schemes i.e.Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura.
  3. Students enrolled in integrated courses can avail scholarship only for the undergraduate part of the course.
  4. Students enrolled in dual degree courses will be eligible to draw scholarship only till the tenure of the first-degree programme.
  5. The scholarship will be awarded in general degree courses, professional courses, technical courses, medical and paramedical courses (including MBBS, BAMS, BDS, B.Arch., B.Tech.etc.)
  6. Beneficiaries of any other scholarship (State/ Institute or other Ministry) will not be considered for this award during the tenure of award of that scholarship.

Application Procedure

Applicants need to register and submit the application at the NSP portal (https://scholarships.gov.in/). The first time applicants are referred to as Fresh Students, and the students who have been granted a scholarship in any of the schemes on-boarded at NSP in the immediately preceding Academic Year, are referred to as Renewal students.

Fresh Applicants - need to register (using the icon " New Registration") at the portal to fill in the educational, bank account and other relevant details after which they receive a unique application number and password, which is used to login for the detailed application form.

Renewal Applicants - can only apply for renewal in the same scheme, for which they have been granted a scholarship in the previous academic year. Those wishing to apply for another scheme must withdraw the renewal application and register as a Fresh Student.

Students can also apply through the Mobile App - ' National Scholarships' available at Google Play Store or use the UMANG app launched by the government previously.
