Laser Science and Technology Center, functioning under Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), located in Delhi, is the primary research laboratory which specializes in the development of lasers and related technologies and their applications in defense. These are the excerpts of the experiences of students who completed their internship at LASTEC, DRDO, Delhi.

Current Year: 4th

Application and Selection Procedure:

One has to send a mail to the director of the laboratory and attached with it the mark sheets of class 10th, class 12th and grade card, and a letter of recommendation of the HOD of my department. It is supposed to be done by January. If they get shortlisted, they are called for an interview round in March. After qualifying the interview round, they will get a joining letter.

However, I couldn’t send the mail by January. Luckily, this time, due to a large number of applicants, they conducted a second round of interview in the second week of May. After I was selected, I got a joining letter in the third week of May.

The organization didn’t provide any stipend or accommodation during my internship, so I had to stay in a PG for the seven weeks. However, I had a pretty good experience during my stay there. Moreover, most of it is because of the guide I got. He is a senior scientist, and he was happy to share much information with me. He took us to labs and explained the uses of the things that we built, which helped me in my learning process. However, if one doesn’t get a good guide, then it is all up to them to ask around and learn out of their effort.

Students from many colleges came for the internship. There were students from IIT Delhi, IIT BHU, DTU, IIT Guwahati, NIT Allahabad, and other colleges also. We designed high powered lasers in the laboratory during our internship, which have power outputs in the range of hundreds of kilowatts. These lasers can be fired at enemy ammunition like bombs and missiles to melt their outer parts and disable them. Although we weren’t getting any stipend in the beginning, at the end of our internship, they decided to give Rs. 10,000 to each one of us as a stipend.

Overall, I had a good experience, and because of my guide, I was able to learn many things. It gave me good exposure and a good learning curve.
